What Is a Sewer Camera Inspection?
When To Perform a Sewer Camera Inspection
- Aging Homes. Most older homes have clay or cast iron sewer lines. As homes age, so do the pipe materials. Deteriorating sewer lines allow for root intrusion, breaks, and cracks. Homes with clay lines are more susceptible to root intrusion and breaks since they are installed in five-foot sections. At connections, the seals can wear down and roots can easily enter.
- Frequent Sewer Backups. Often, home and business owners do not think about the sewer line until a problem occurs. Common sewer line problems that result in frequent backups include heavy root intrusion, hard scale buildup closing off the inside of the pipe, deterioration from aging pipelines, breaks or cracks, or low spots reducing flow. A sewer camera inspection will reveal the problem.
- Large Trees. For properties with large trees in the yard, or even close by, performing a sewer camera inspection can indicate if roots are growing into the line. Tree roots seek the rich nutrients found in main sewer lines and can infiltrate through even small seams or cracks in the line. Once inside, they will continue to grow and cause major damage to the main sewer line.
- New Home Purchase. City Plumbing & Rooter recommends performing a sewer camera inspection prior to purchasing a new home. Often, new home inspections only include easily-visible problems. By viewing the condition of the inside of a sewer line, new home buyers can make sure that their new home will not come with future repair costs or frequent backups.
- Before Heavy Rains. Southern California doesn’t get much rain, which means area or landscaping drains can become clogged during dry weather and go unnoticed. When area drains are not regularly used, debris, dirt, rocks and other elements can settle in the line. When heavy rains do come, clogged drains can cause backups and even flood homes. A camera inspection of the area drain is the only way to determine if the pipe is clear.
